Sleeping Steven
Young Steven is sleeping alone in his room
next to the broom that he's dreaming of.
He's dreaming that the broom has grown
and upon the broom sits a Wicked Witch,
with a wicked wart wiggling on her wicked nose.
All the while with her wiggling wart wiggling,
the Wicked Witch winks at Steven.
The Wicked Witch talks to Steven.
The Wicked Witch says that even
if Steven tries to run away
she'll block his way.
There will be no way for Steven to escape.
A screaming Steven, scared, wakes up from this dream
and scrambles to his mother's side.
"Mommy, mommy!" quite loud says he,
"The Scary Witch is scaring me.
She was standing by my bed,
saying that she would get me!"
"Steven, Steven," quite soft says she,
"There's no need to bother me.
Come and sleep now in my bed,
the Scary Witch is just a dream,
the Scary Witch is just a dream."
Just as Steven slips off to sleep,
he sees the Wicked Witch standing by his mother's side.
He screams for the Witch to go away,
but Steven only wakes his mother.
"Steven, Steven!" quite cross says she,
"I really need to get some sleep.
That Scary Witch is just a dream."
Every night, when the sun goes down,
and when Steven goes to sleep,
the same Wicked Witch appears to Steven,
but only in his dream.
And every night Steven wakes up scared
and scrambles to his mother's side.
Steven has sleepless nights.
Yes, Steven has sleepless nights.
Soon Steven's crazy uncle Carl comes for a visit,
and hears of Steven's sleepless nights.
"Steeeven, Steven," quite strange says he,
"I know how to fix your sleep.
Go and sleep now in your bed,
just remember what your uncle Carl says..."
Steven goes to sleep and takes his uncle Carl's advice.
When the Wicked Witch appears to Steven, he asks two simple questions twice.
"Who are you? Can we go for a ride?
Who are you? Can we go for a ride,
High into the sky, just you and I?"
"I would take you high and then drop you to the ground,
and all the other children would be crying at the sound.
All the other children would be gathering around,
and I, the Wicked Witch, would throw them to the ground!"
"Go on lying, keep it up!" Steven follows Carl's plan,
though he can feel his sheets are trembling in his hand,
"I'll be flying home to the land of golden sand,
where I was before you came and scared me with your plan.
I know you are lying, you're from that golden land,
but things around here scare you so you snare them with your hands."
The Wicked Witch staggers from Steven's words, and falls to the ground,
melting to a puddle of water. Before Steven's eyes, the water rises up
as a glamorous Dove, and the light of the moon sparkles on its wings.
"I am the Dove," cries the bird to Steven,
"Few have found me here before,
so I will hide from you no more.
My voice is like the ocean's roar,
my wings are stirrups, let us soar."
Steven listens to the Dove
with triumph in his heart.
He hops on the Dove's back,
and they speed blissfully to the Golden Moon.
